Learning the differences between Pines, Cedars, Cypresses, Redwoods, Firs, Spruces, Larch etc is quite straight forward and easy, differentiating the sub-species is much harder though.

An ID book is the much better way to go, spend £25 on a good rather than around £100if not more on a course, also field ID's are much better learnt in the field than a class room.

If you can go to Kew, Westenburt, Bedgebury or somewhere similar where they have fantastic collections of conifers with tree ID tags on as well

I asked the same question you did a few years ago and got the same answer ...... Buy a Collins field guide! Get out and about and learn them it's the best way! Or go to an arboretum and look around, trees will be labeled there where you can see for yourself.
