Does anyone know of a sawmill in the Hampshire area? I'm looking to buy some wood for a workbench project. Also if anyone knows of someone with a portable mill that would come out to site as i have a few stems i'm thinking of getting milled up.

Cheers, James.

Hi James, what sort of timber are you looking for and how much?

Re. Milling, an idea on number, size and access would establish whether you need a band mill or chainsaw mill?

Alec

Its for a workbench so i won't need a great deal. I'll have to make up a cutting list. but a rough estimate would be:

6 5x5 or 4x4 posts 1.5m long

20 4x2's maybe 2.4 or 3m long

and something suitable for the top?

not sure what the best wood would be either? i presume it would have to be relatively dry.

As for the milling i already have an alaskan and access would be easy as i was thinking of collecting all the butts up and putting them in a barn ready to be milled. at the moment i have 3 2footish Beech stems and probably able to get the same again in oak.

i have 5" beech if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer, but i think beech might be a bit to good for a workbench!

and i have some of my own to be milled if i wanted to use it.

i was thinking about using fence posts for the legs but apparently there would be high moisture content in them and the pressure treatment they use on them smells a lot!

By workbench do you mean general purpose tools and oily stuff etc?

I have some cheap poplar which makes good tops as it is very stable and doesn't splinter but no idea how I would get it to you.

I suggest you need a bandsaw mill for those butts - I think Delabodge hired one not far from you.
