Hi Guys

I'm looking at getting a run around for my surveyor but ideally needs to be off road! Are the Landrover Freelanders any good? Seen at 53 plate on with services history 65k for £2.5k!

In a word no, some are slightly better

What engine/ gearbox?

I looked at getting a freelander van, but i decieded i wouldnt like no low range and i would probably have, burnt the clutch out towing trailers that were too heavy for it. I bought an isuzu trooper (157hp 3.0 deisel, 30mpg, 3.3ton towing capacity) in the end, you could get a mint one with £2500.

We run 2 freelander commercials and they have been no problem at all. That td4 version returns 50+ mpg and will scramble around just about everywhere it needs to . They are a very car like motorway cruiser as well. as said it wont make a tow barge but just for surveying or the cutters to run about in I would highly recommend one.

Viscous coupling can cause problems on them when they are getting on a bit. There are whole industries built up around repairing them :D Some say they have a service life of around 70,000 miles.

I used to have one as a GreenMech tow tug! Slightly high geared in 1st and reverse for towing and yes I fried a clutch trying to shift 1800kgs on a boggy surface but other than that, she was good. Comfortable, economical, reliable and generally capable - a good tool! TD4 power did 140k miles in three years just with routine servicing and a battery, twice cleaned and refitted the crankcase breather mind.

downside was very dear servicing from the main dealers!

Just remember the golden rules of buying a Freelander: firstly, never buy a petrol one; secondly, always obey the first rule!

I ran a TD4 for three years and loved it, great around town, extremely comfortable, quite capable off road (pulled through mud ruts at Lowther show when it was a mud bath, unlike the 110 infront that was skating all over the place), surprising what you can get in the back. Only problem I had was fuel pump packed up at 48000 miles and Land Rover were not bothered - it's a common problem apparently. And you rarely see a rusty one!
