Was thinking walnut - juglans?

snap a twig, if it's walnut it has a chambered pith...

 

could it be a hophornbeam?

I was thinking Walnut due to the pinnate leaf arrangement.

 

Maybe ailanthus or hickory, but not familiar with any of species.

 

There were several trees similar nearby, but didnt want to muddy the waters with more pics. All trees had really large catkins, the biggest I have seen.

Walnuts have catkins, but all my walnuts are reddish when they first open leaf (the leaves come out red, then turn green) but maybe tropical Wiltshire is a bit ahead of us backward folk in Lincs?

Friend suggested it may be Pterocarya fraxinifolia, caucasian wingnut.
