read a lot of posts on gear being nicked. i had a word with our local country watch team re the increase in thefts. there reply is a lot disapers never to be found but they do find a quantity of related equipment when doing a raid.

but trouble they have when they put serial numbers into there database nothing comes up that its stolen so have to leave the gear with the person they raided.

there advice is take pictures of all you gear with serial numbers. now thats easy just put photo on pc using software picasso or like serial number can be put onto picture with any discerning marks. if it gets stolen you can then give copy to police to put onto database. may never come back but one in a hundred may be found.

i have had a hedge trimmer stolen had serial numbers as yet has not been found but at least the police have it in case it ever turns up.

something needs to be done to nip this crime in bud but as yet no tracker has been made which will fit small tools. yet can chip a dog.

This is the idea behind the recent Datatag roadshows for Stihl. Saws get an rf chip, microdots and a barcode sticker. The hope is Stihl will manufacture the saws with the chip embedded. Then any Stihl saw without the barcode will be checked if found.
