Hi i have recently received a call from a company called service magic, what they basically do is they get leeds from costumers who are searching for you're services "tree surgeons" what they do is you pay an initial fee of 30 pounds then you pay £12 plus vat per lead now this is weather you go and give the customer a quote or not. I was just wondering if anyone had used a service like this before or even this service and if its any good

P.s this is my first time using arb talk so please help :confused1:

Any idiot can see that's simply a license for them to invoice you. Sorry to be harsh mate but best you learn quickly.

Stick around on here and there is lots of good advice. You will learn an absolute ton just browsing the business management section. If there's anything else you're unsure about, post away! :thumbup1:

If you're starting out, the most important thing to do is to talk to EVERYONE you know and tell them what you're doing. Then when you get your first job, knock on all the doors nearby with a leaflet and do the same.

Word of mouth and personal introductions return 10x the success rate of leafleting, and 1000x the rate of the sort of companies you mentioned.

There are loads of problems with this service, I've read about clients complaining to the company after the job, leading to no pay for the contractor, who still has to pay the commission. You also have to pay for every lead regardless of winning the job, and the company actively recommends your competitors and stuff. I'd avoid it myself.

I actually investigated it in this thread when it was beating me on google with 'spam' style websites filled with hundreds of key-words. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/business-management/67743-spam-website-trusted-treesurgeons-com.html

Here is an example of a thread with plenty of feedback regarding their services. http://www.pissedconsumer.com/reviews-by-company/service-magic.html

A quick google search of Service Magic brings up some horror stories, both from customers and contractors that have used their services.

I've not Googled, but I can guarantee that a 1 year auto renewing contract will be in the small print somewhere. Same with that company purporting to give leads to local authority work.

On my 'to do' list one day is to ring a few of these companies and waste as much of their time as I can, whilst recording the conversations. I was thinking it could be a good exercise for my mates Amateur Dramatic class, in fact. :laugh1::lol:

I used service magic around six years ago & it worked well for me for around a year, then all of these other trades persons sites arrived on tinternet & was finding I was paying for the customers info only to contact them & the work had already been done. This happened loads. I know a high percentage of posts from customers are not real jobs, but once you ask for their details it cost you. Steer well clear is my advice.
