zetor tractor starter stuck !

Using an old zetor yesterday, long story short !

kept cutting out due to a fuel fault so was cranking for a while till it fired up.

would not start but( i think the solenoid) was still spinning even with the key out

had to whip battery lead off,bit of a spark !

i dont want to put lead back on as i have heard the battery could explode, leads were very hot by the time i got back with a spanner.

any thoughts , is the starter knackered or more of an electrical fault from start button?

this wasnt exactly a long story short really was it lol

Take the starter motor off, and use jump leads to test that it is working straight from the battery. Negative clipped to the metal casing of the starter, Positive to the copper bolt on the back of the starter. This should cause the motor to spin, if you then use the positive jump lead to bridge across to the connection on the solenoid, you can test that as well. If they both work, then it is a question of fault finding between the starter button or key and the starter itself.

Does that make sense ?

Do this, then this.

Only try a starter for 10 to 20 seconds absolute MAXIMUM then let the system cool. The system is not designed for prolonged use and if this is disregarded you risk damage.

solenoid was running for a about 5 minutes time id got back with a spanner

After you have checked the solenoid and starter individually as SMGs info, assuming they both appear to work, then clip the positive jump lead on the solenoid main input terminal and then run a feed to the its small activating terminal. Test this a few times to ensure it does not reweld the contacts if it works. Also it should throw the pinion hard against its stop at a fair speed.

 

After that wire in a test bulb to the small solenoid wire on the tractor to prove the ignition switch/ wiring (and relay contacts if there is one) are not short circuited.

I would suggest checking the wiring even if you find the solenoid faulty as one could cook the other.

What has happened is the contacts in the solenoid have over heated and stuck, this can be temporary or after heavy loading like you have done permanent.

Either way you will need to get it checked as once they stick it is usually terminal. I have seen them to stay running while the engine was running resulting in a replacement unit being required.

The genuine one was a "Pal" but there was an alternative available that could be fitted with a little modification.
