wood floor

Am planning on building a new house upcountry. Several of my friends have suggested that i use a wood floor for my house. Am really confused since am afraid the floor may not be water proof.

Does anyone have an experience with a wooden floor? Please advise me.

What construction experience do you have, and what type of wooden flooring are you wanting to know about. Is this anything to do with your other threads ?

I've laid a few oak and mahogany floors in heavy traffic areas of our house. Finished with osmo polyx oil which just brushes on. Water has little effect and you can recoat if the sheen fades. The original lounge oak floor was getting a bit grubby so management mopped it. Came up clean again and still looking good. Not sure if you could do that with soft wood though. A bit dearer than carpet but it's a once only expense. I would recommend hardwood floors.

Wooden floors are great. A properly laid floor is water resistant. Not much is water proof.

Leave some expansion room. A friend of mine laid his oak parquet tight up to the skirting boards and it lifted itself when it got damp.

solid wood only, don't use laminate.

Wooden flooring is great but look in to it as there are loads of things to take in to consideration. Type of timber is important, spacing is important and if your looking at having a log burner look at the regulations for gaps you need etc etc.

I would avoid going down the laminate route at it soon looks cheep and tacky IMO.

It's great material but take time with it and look in to it properly before jumping in head first.

No real experience on my part other than helping a mate out who does flooring for a living.
