Trailer Noises

Hi

 

Got a new braked trailer a couple of weeks ago. 8x4 single axle 1 ton capacity.

 

When we're reversing it when it's full (only when starting the reverse, never at the end, if you get my drift) we're occasionally getting one or two very loud metallic bangs which reverberate right through the landrover.

 

Pretty sure it's from the trailer but can't see anything obviously wrong, nor work out where it's coming from. In every other respect it's fine.

 

Can anyone shed any light?

check the spring bushes also, they will be at the leading end of the spring, .... when empty put a pry bar between hanger shackel and chassis if there is a clunlk and movement then new bolts and bushes, also while you are down there chect the sliding/trailing side, you may see wear to the sides into the guides... this also indicates worn bushes.... cheap to fix and will be a quieter trailer.

The trailer's brand new so I wouldn't expect anything to be worn, and there's no free play in anything we can see.

 

What would be the mechanics behind the brake locking on and then releasing? That would be normal?

 

It only ever happens when when we've come to a halt then started to reverse - usually when arriving back at the unit which requires a stop then 60 degree reverse turn.

is it an ifor williams, mine locks up if the chipper isnt sat right on the trailer ,ie, if its sat were it looks right ,its wrong have to track overthe front axle a tad to release the brakes

It sounds like the cams in the brake drums ( brake going forwards, unlock when forced the opposite way) are sticking a little when the brakes work harder (loaded).

Knock the drums off and just check the spindles on the cams are free to rotate and have some lubrication.
