Boggy area where walnut stump was ground out

Hi all. Been asked for advice by customer who had biggish walnut removed in the winter, stump was ground out to below ground level but obviously not completely. Anyone had experience with this problem of stump still releasing water and making a boggy area? What are the options? Dig up and grind out completely? Dig up and glyphosate? Leave it to die off naturally? Any advice greatfuly received

Surely by removing the tree which was using a lot of the moisture in the area, the ground will naturally become more moist.

Without having seen it I think it is abnormally boggy, especially given the recent hot dry weather.

My parents had a really large puddle in their garden beneath a sycamore. It turned out there was a blocked pipe causing the puddle.

 

Perhaps a pipe was damaged when the tree was taken down? You can buy "drain dye" to put in toilets/pipes to see where water goes to.

 

I don't see why the roots of a tree would still be pumping water 6 months after the tree has been cut down...

All pipes are on the other side of house I'm told

A simple test to see if water comes from a sewerage system is to throw a stone into it. If there are bubbles it's likely to have some sewage in it (bubbles due to soaps etc).

 

With the blocked pipe in my parents garden they had no idea it was there (they had been in the house for 40 years).

I had to dig 1 out a couple of months ago and the ground below the main trunk was very wet compared with the surrounding ground.

How long ago was it felled before you dug it out?
