stag beetles

do stags all come out on the same day???

 

 

i rarely see them, only 4 or 5 times in my life yet just saw up to 10 flying about in mine and my neighbours garden at the same time.

 

is tonight the lucky night for all these males?

We don't get to see them in the North.

I miss them since moving up here many moons ago.

 

They are mainly found in the south east and south west of England.

In May and June they are flying; looking for dead and decaying wood to lay their eggs on to start the next generation.

 

Be nice to them.

They are a protected species.

i remember seeing them every year as a kid, havnt seen one in about 30 years

I currently have some in a vase full of woodchip in my kitchen that I rescued from a stump I was grinding. Going to fill a hollow log up with chip and re-home them

Very interesting.

 

I've tried hard to decipher any possible connection with Stag beetles being found on or near the Wirral.

I still think that I'm more likely to find a cat-flap on a submarine in Birkenhead docks.

There will always be the oddball Stag beetle that goes astray and forgets which area of the country its meant to be in.

I've heard that 90% of stag beetles in UK are in Surrey and London, South of the river. Have seen a couple today, often see them here, and see them fighting quite often too.

it's no wonder they are a protected species as they flew in to just about everything, trees, trellis, houses, fence, windows and anything else they could find. not the most graceful of flyers...

Not seen one round here, would love to see them fly! Beetles that size look like they are too heavy too fly!

 

We get quite a few cockchafer's though. Got a turn the other night with a cockchafer flying against the bathroom window (which I leave permanently open a crack). Sounded like someone strimming the window frame!
