Anyone go kayaking?

I'm thinking of having a go and just wondered what the crack was. Where do people go? There's a canal near me but I'd imagine it might be a bit boring after a while. Also what to go for if I bought one. Cheers

Re: Anyone go kayaking?

I joined a kayak club and they practice in the local swimming pool one night a week. Its the perfect environment to practice strokes and rolls and stuff. When I lived in Burnley there was one at Pendle Wavelenghts baths in Nelson. Is that too far from you? There'll be one closer perhaps. That way you'll be able to get a feel for if you like it and if you want to spend money on your own. They'll advise you on what to buy too.
Ive stopped going at the moment just because of other time commitments but it does get a bit stale after while in the pool. Rivers are where you want to be!!

Re: Anyone go kayaking?

In the nicer weather the Pendle club used to launch at Foulridge on to the Leeds Liverpool canal. On my "to do" list is a canoe trip along the entire length of the Leeds/Liverpool.

Re: Anyone go kayaking?

* Amust is to find a local club and rent the kit and to be taught about the activity, you could find your self in trouble if you go alone and without training. Def give it ago though bud

Re: Anyone go kayaking?

I do it from time to time especially when on holiday. The sit on top type are very stable. I would probably try before you buy though. It is great fun and you can get close to some wildlife.
A bit like treework really gives you lots of your own space.

Re: Anyone go kayaking?

Mike, it may be worth checking the BCU site.

http://www.bcu.org/

I canoe and coach the skills but this site may give you the info. you need to get started - including local clubs and officers etc.
