Buying Slings

Hi,

First post and recently qualified so please be patient. Could not see where in Equipment to put this so hopefully it's ok here.

I'm in the process of getting a lug-all winch (4000) for dealing with potential hung up trees in some private woodland that I manage and am going to want some slings as well.

I can get 'expensive' slings from a specialist arb seller e.g. Landmark Trading 5m 5Tonne for ~£35 or buy 'cheaper' slings from a more general lifting seller e.g. SafetyLiftingGear same for about ~£30. I know that they are very similar in price but the latter also do 3T Webbing Lifting Strops for ~£17. What is the advantage of these round slings and is there any reason not to get them from a general supplier.

Also what sizes would people recommend. I would probably like to be able to use this with the truck winch which is rated at 4100kg.

Thanking you in anticipation of your response.

Chris

Round slings are a sleeve filled with a single continuous fiber that circles round and round, the mass of stands are loose in the sleeve so when a load is applied they all tighten simultaneously, sharing the load in a way that cannot be achieved with woven slings. This makes them much stronger for their weight and bulk than woven flat slings, and also makes them last longer as the ware is distributed randomly in a different place each time the sling is deployed. The jacket sleeve also protects the fibbers from abrasion and UV - the downside is it makes inspection of the interior difficult if not impossible. Here is a video of how they make round slings - the ones shown have a transparent sleeve so you can monitor the inner load bearing fibers.

I bought mine from a crowd in Germany, Grube.de - very good prices, can't remember how to get the english version of their site though.

a sling is a sling is a sling, as long as your slings are properly manufactured, labled, and carry an swl tag, find the cheapest supplier you can, screwfix and toolstation are hard to beat, and as slings used for pulling timber get a really hard time, there cheap enough to throw away if in any doubt

long enough to wrap around the hung tree, put a "D" shackle througth the eyes and hook your lugall cable to the shackle, same at the other fixed end. so a couple of 2mtr ones and maybe a 3mtr one, if theres a lot of small timber get a couple of 1mtr ones, but the deciding factor is the dia of the trees your cutting
