Saw my brother running up the lane and he came back hiding something.

Handed it to me with a big smile and said " Explain this "

Now we reckon it's a Tufted duck . They are a diving duck and like deepish water.

Nearest water with any depth is the Middle Level main drain about a mile away.

So how did it get here , it's obviously a chick and can't fly.

It is however , a strong runner, and beautiful.

Any sign of injury ? Could have been picked up by Buzzard or similar and dropped for some reason .

Not within waddling range.

It's possible he came up the miriad of dykes and drains that surround the area , but they are not very well connected to the lane.

 

Odd one . He looks like a she at the moment .
