I have experience with both but I am after some other opinions on what you think is the best option for using on steep terrain? What would be best to transport fencing materials? Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Can't imagine many of us have experience with both mules and quads! In fact you're probably the most experienced in that department?

My mate up in perthshire is a gamekeeper and he swears by his kubota mule, uses that for carting feedetc and for fetching deer carcasses off the hill. Never been a prob.

Another one for kubota:thumbup1: all depends on your finances wheather you buy a mule or quad.

having had both i would comment as follows

if it is a deisel mule then it burns nothing in way of fuel compared to pectrol quad

if you carry passengers mule

if you dont like trailers and all your gear getting mud splattered go for mule

steep up hill mule very stable

steep doun hill scary as when you lift foot of trottle the variable speed pulley goes into neutral and it time for new y fronts.to go down safely you nee to use low box and full throttle (can be scary too) except for the kubota which has hydrostatic gearbox so you have engine braking .quads are better going down but not so comfy.

a mule has the turning circle of a landrover!!while a quad is a lot tighter, unless you are chasing sheep this might not matter.

if you roll a quad you die ,while in a mule you might survive.

quads get nicked a lot more than mules

mule has a roof windscreen and doors (sometimes)and in minus 10 they are a lot better than a quad or in the rain.

i am sure 9i missed a few but there is some food for thought

the mule is kawasaki, no engine break and clunky, farmers in wetr areas like thewm because most tractor places sell them and thery are light.

quads are ok, but you need a trailer and no much room for carrying stuff.

I have a Kibuto RTV, its brilliant. i have a cab with no doors, tipping body, hydraulics and a front mounted winch. Runs on cherry for buttons.

biggarlogs has it pretty much spot on, I have the luxury of the use of both and take what is best suited to the job - we did trial a kubota but after a demo of the polaris 6 wheeler there is no comparison on the hill you are getting into argo territory with it although it is quite low slung and stable it does belly out quite quick in the very soft

I tend to use the bike most of the time though for the following reasons

it is easyer to use your body weight on a sideslope- i drive across hill with uphill foot on the footrest and downhill leg knee on seat it allows you to "step off" if it does go over

if you do get stuck with the bike you can usually get it out on your own by lifting the front onto fresh ground or standing alongside and pushing while gently pressing throttle

the bike is narrower and much easyer to negotiate round roots or rocks and you can see them better on bike

only other thing I would add the trailer I have for the bike was built/adapted so wheels are under the trailer and same width as the bike wheels so it does not cut seperate tracks or hit root/rock you have just squeezed through and a swivel hitch so if the trailer goes over it dosent try to take the bike with it

We have a quad but since this oddball 5 wheel gadget turned up its made the quad almost redundant. It takes a big round bale of hay around our sodden fields and wont leave a mark. The same bale on a trailer behind the quad used to spend all its time stuck in mud and trashing the place.

Its like this one.
