Anyone got any good solutions to the eternal problem of finding a vehicle that can perform the following roles

carry 5 or 6 people occasionally

be a van most of the time

return 40+MPG

be nice enough for a 60 mile a day commute

pull a tonne when needed

cost around 4-6000

all ideas greatly appreciated

Apart from the 6 people thing my old Peugeot 406 estate fills that spec perfectly, as would many estates. Fold seats down and you've got a van (my 406 has a longer load space than my old disco), I get over 45mpg one the single track roads we ha e over here, will pull a ton happily, no problems on the commute and you'll get a heap of change from £4000! I paid £650 for my 2000 model 12 months ago and its been faultless, the best van I've had.

Transit 280 with a window in side door and 2 rows of extra seats will do all those except the 40mpg (I got 34 on a long run) and price is dependant on how old.

Just got an old (2000) seat alhambra, same factory and design as ford galaxy/vw sharan up till around 2006 ish. They have seven seats, and all the rear ones come right out leaving a big flat load space with tie down points. It also has lightweight roof bars. Very comfortable to drive with air con/cruise control etc standard on many of them.

My 2.0 petrol is gutless, but a 1.9tdi would return ok mpg.

Plenty about, mine has 102k on the clock, payed £1100 for it. Newer versions are less van like, and you can fill an older one with logs and not worry about the dirt!
