I've built several - And I can tell you now its a pain! Your dealing with high hydraulic forces, and you have to have decent machined ram mounts, or you'll just tear them off. A trailer ram will not be suitable as it needs to be a two way action...

My most recent is a table top (vertical) splitter, with the ram mounted inside the Box section - but I screwed up on the knife size and bent it.

 

Having said that, its a good feeling building your own kit. Go for it, and if you need any specific advice, dont hesitate to ask

I'm thinking about building one to mount on the bucket attachment of the digger.One that you could lay over a log thats on the ground and split it or turn it to standing and use it for shorter rounder chunks.I was thinking of using a section of RSJ to mount the ram on. And the ramt pushes a knife onto a foot plate?

The little hoses that run to the thumb on the bucket might be too small,so Ed could I extend the lines that run to the blade ram with solid pipes along the main boom and dipper arm?I'd have to use flexable hydralic hose at the knuckles but it might save on cost?I'm going to be doing a fair bit of welding shortly to make a chip box,so any ideas would be appreciated.:icon14:

Im on with making one im using a rsj with threequarter inch plate foot plate.The ram is attached to the side of the girder and a piece of railway line as the wedge,the base of the rail line is attached to the rsj with brackets so it can slide up and down,made one before and it works fine so im doing one for my kabota.

I have built a few log splitters for people and repaired a few made by others! I have always used RSJ as to get box section man enough for the job its harder & more costly to find.

 

The biggest problem people have is estimating the ram force witch really is quite easy, most hydraulics work at 180bar (2610psig) to 200bar (2900psig) with peeks of up to 230bar (3336psig) thus each 1”² of ram is worth 3336lb (1513kg) of force, a ram that has an internal diameter of 3” (~75mm) will have a surface area of 7.0685”² (~44.178cm²) meaning a peek force of 23580.5lb (10698.95kg).

 

Ram internal diameter (1” = ~25mm, 1”² = ~6.25cm²)

1” = 0.7853”² = 1188.15kg

1.5” = 1.7671”² = 2673.62kg

2” = 3.1415”² = 4753.08kg

2.5” = 4.9087”² = 7426.86kg

3” = 7.0685”² = 10694.64kg

3.5” = 9.6211”² = 14556.72kg

4” = 12.5663”² = 19012.81kg

4.5” = 15.9043”² = 24063.20kg

 

 

Π * R * R = airea²

 

Diameter / 2 = R

 

Π = ~3.14159
