Just price the work. Don't sell time or that's all you'll ever earn

Problem is he doesn't know how to price it! In that case best just go hourly but 12 quid really? My Web site guy charges 30 an hour with a laptop!

Good advice re price per job as opposed to per hour, if you do a good job there should be no issues, too many fall in to trap of pricing per hour , do not disclose hourly rate or you will have client clock watching & querying , hourly rate should be based on overhead costs, fuel for machines, travel time, PL insurance & others need to be added provided this is to be main source of income, which will hopefully work out for the lad.

Thanks. The lads been working for someone else for 15 yrs, so he has a good idea of how long jobs take. What he doesn't appreciate, is the costs of running a business. He earns £8/hr (only recently increased from £7.50) and that's in working/ supervisory role. I guess £12/hr sounds like a big hike in pay; but I would agree, it's not enough for a self employed guy. I think £12 was for labour only mind; not for using his own gear; still not enough though.

Hour rate is for retirees turning up for an afternoon to use clients tools.

Get your own gear, it's quicker than fixing theirs and looking daft taking for ever with it and charge for it.

Where in east Yorks? I get asked for a gardener sometimes. Pm me if you prefer.
