Large Ash needs to go!

Hello everyone,

Sadly my 150 yr old Ash has to come down as it has rot at the base. It is big old thing, approx 20tons of timber should come out of it.

Wondering if it is worth anything in terms of timber value due to the size of it?

Im guessing it will be expensive to remove so looking at options to offset the cost of removal.

Thanks in advance.

Very difficult to make much off a single tree.

Someone may be interested in the main stem for milling if it can be straight felled rather than dismantled.

Wood turners may be interested in crotches & burrs.

Neither will be prepared to pay much as they will only be hobbyists.

It would be more valuable if you sold it as firewood but people would expect it to be ringed up at the very least if not split as well & value would vary depending on whether you could deliver it or if you wanted them to pick it up. Could be advertised as firewood on ebay or a card in a local shop window no guarantee there will be any interest whatsoever though.

why does everyone think woodturners are all tight fisted gits...

we are not all old farts who think that tree surgeons should pay us to take it away you know.

firewood is £80m3 (including air) = £2.26 ft3

for milled green timber i usually pay £15ft3 regardless of what it is.

With the exception of slack on here that has been my exact finding of wood turners.

All the ones I have met are, they want the wood for a pittance and seem to think it's their right to have the wood instead of firewooding it. Lol
