Airpots

Sorry folks more questions. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some research into the use of airpots? I've searched, on and off, for a few days and have only found one scientific article - tested on seedlings mainly for the purpose of stopping spiralling roots, which noted a stress issue (probably water stress) using a chlorophyll fluorescence meter.

I've been through T&F's back issues of the Arb Journal in vain too. Anyone come across anything, positive or negative?

Can't help with the theory of it but I bought a Copper Beech recently that had been grown in one of these and the root ball was superb. :thumbup1:

I can believe it, I've been reading a lot of the horticultural articles on them and a lot of the big tree growers are really converted to them. It's a brilliant concept and they're being used for all sorts of stuff. Medicinal cannabis:lol: growers are raving on them - no pun intended...... told you I'd been doing a lot of reading:001_rolleyes:

I think it might just make successful establishment of urban trees a little easier:thumbup:

It certainly creates a more healthy root stock than standard enclosed potting. Can't be cheap either as the guy who I bought it from removed the 'pot' and wrapped the root ball in hessian before delivering it. Does look like something that belongs in a Soho window though. :blushing::lol:

A quick play with Google (to see if an air-pot was what I thought it was) took me to Growing Trees & Shrubs in Air-Pots where the Home page claims that Kew and Bedgebury use them.

Any help?

I remember seeing air-pots on the telly some years ago in use for tree growing in Italy so they're not a brand new idea are they. The verdict on that programme was that they lead to excellent fibrous root development because if a root dares to stick its nose through a hole the tip dies, causing lateral breakout of new rootlets within the pot.

I've been on that site, deepdales, majestic, Caledonians and a few more. I just can't find much research, users say they're great, I understand the concept but it would be nice to see some scientific research and some empirical data. But thankyou kindly.:thumbup1:

That's normal practice, they're made from recyclable material and can be recycled. Think on the bigger sizes that 3-4 re-uses is claimed and Caledonian has been cutting prices as the demand grows. Also means that there is less waste materials to move off of site for the end user.

I don't know the cost of pots generally, but they're on ebay for not a lot - to my mind:laugh1: Not so sure about why the'd be in soho:confused1::lol::lol:
