Had a go at Cleft Chestnut Fencing

This was our first time doing this type of fencing and i loved it! Looks awesome!

Fell and split all the materials ourself, was good fun and in such a nice location! My boss (my second cousint) great grandparents lived in that house so it added a bit more satisfaction to the job.

i will probably sound a complete idiot, but is the chestnut seasoned or not, if green do you have to cut your lengths longer to allow for drying/shrinking?

you dont sound like an idiot, we didnt really know what we were doing making it up as we went along aha, the wood wasnt seasoned as such, it wasnt straight out the ground we fell it just over a year ago,

 

you can see in some of the pics some of the rails are right through the mortices so shrinking should not be a problem, they shouldnt come out of the two mortices
