Not the best truck out of all the makes...but for £1,500 think you won't be paying over the odds...offer £1,200 cash. Then leaves you a bit for any issues to sort out.just make sure all the tyres are good as that can be exspensive if you have to get any.

I had an ex-environment agency 53 plate; at 100k, viscous fan sheared mountings & took out radiator/intercooler, at 150k big end failed, it had been serviced regularly by Mitsubishi main dealer all its life & not abused. Service costs are high, spare parts are expensive, cab is cramped (if over 6 foot), payload is ok, leaf sprung rear suspension is archaic.

Swapped to a Defender 130 - coil sprung, more dealers/specialists, lots of parts at very reasonable prices, easy to repair, high payload (1.5 tonnes), great towing ability.

You get good ones and bad ones. For £1500 well worth a punt.

Fuel consumption is bad in my opinion. I have mud terrains on which doesn't help but around town, driven sensibly is 22-25 ish. Towing around town 12-15mpg. Ok on a A road run but above 55mph it gets noisey, bumpy and the mpg really starts to drop.

Spares and repairs are straight forward - I use Milners for most items. I've replaced both CV joints, battery and alternator, coolant and all oils and nothing difficult to do.

Edit - might be year dependent. I am talking about the K74 upto 2005 model.

I had a 2004 in 2006/8 was pretty unreliable. Head gasket went at 80k and turned out to be a cracked head . Steering box leaked badly , cost a fortune to replace then the transfer box started acting up , another fortune !!

It was fine till it got to around 80k though

It certainly seems you get some Friday afternoon ones. Head gasket is a common problem, generally in the 05-06 year, 4D56 engine, caused by faulty ecu / temp sensor which as you say, cracks the head. Applies to Shogun Sport too.

I got lucky with an 04; worked very hard over 140,000 miles and never gave a moments bother. Engine wise I didn't expect any though because I had amber nectar in the sump aka RL 15W40 Diesel Engine Oil. Steering box went on my 98 one, got a good used one for £80. Likewise I had RL in the diffs, gearbox and transfer so no wonder I had no problems! Lubrication is everything!
