Hi all, after a small saw for my firewood and wondering which one you would recommend?

Bit of a pickle really, both saws in my ideal budget and roughly the same spec, just heard about new stihl being hit and miss and thought about husky but then tried to start 1 week old 555 at work the other day and now not sure

Any help much appreciated

Karl

I don't own any of the aforementioned, so please feel free to look on my view with a pinch of salt.

A friend has a MS 171, got it new for firewood, etc. nearly two years ago. Now when it's going, it's ok for stuff up to maybe 100mm at a push. But over that and she's on a prayer. I say when it's going, as it has a habit of dropping out of tune and has a history from day one of either not idling or racing at idle, (sometimes within the same hour). I don't think it's had a month go by, when it wasn't in the dealer for something or other.

If you can manage it, go for the 181. As I understand it, the 181 is basically a 171 but with a different carb to up the power. Or maybe possibly a secondhand 211. Or go for the Husky 140 if you can get one.

Ive got an ms170 which has a tuneable carb fitted and muffler mod I use for hedgelaying and cant rate it highly enough given the price. Use it for everything upto about 9" (in a hedge its easier than having to run get a bigger saw..)

The ms180 has a 1mm bigger piston and tuneable carb I believe so as Barrie says pay the few extra quid.

Replacement parts are cheap compared to the husky, you would fit a new barrel and piston to the stihl but if it where the husky it would be beyond economic repair.
