Using a pole saw up a tree!!

A guy I used to work for at a gardening company used to do trees with no climbing line, just 2 lanyards with ART Climbing aids, and a pole saw!! Oh and spikes.. He would spike the **** out of a tree until he got to a good position then just take it apart with a pole saw! I'd never even heard of it being done like this, probably because of the irreparable damage done to the tree with the spikes and the danger of wielding a pole saw at full extension in a bloody tree!! The guy was strong and fit and never claimed to be a tree surgeon of any type, he just wanted to make sure the company (primarily gardening based) continued to make money. And this was his self taught way of doing it. Luckily he let me take over doing most of the trees, until I got a better job, but was just wondering if anyone else had seen this done or have any stories of reckless "tree surgery"!
