Greenmech 220 bottom roller removal.

Hi guys, bottom roller on the GM stopped the other day, so we whipped out the hydraulic motor and the splines are worn but the real wear is the inside of the roller, the "inside splines" have worn to almost nothing.

We're having trouble getting it out, but that's another story, what I'd like to know is does this mean the complete replacement of the roller, there looks like an inner shaft that could slip out and be replaced saving the cost of the whole roller.

Attached is a picture of the roller, you'll see what I mean. Does this piece slide out or not?

I has a 220 a few years ago that did exactly the same, the rollers are sacraficial parts rater than bugger the motor, not sure why you having trouble getting it out though, mine was a doddle and yes I just put a new roller in complete, best ask PeteB.

A whole roller is not the end of the world I guess.

The four torque bolts at the other end are reluctant to let go and are now rounded out!

I'll have to get it to an agricultural engineers to get it out, I might as well give them the new roller and tell them to put it in as well.

The spline in the hyd motor is easily replaceable.

It isn't removable but you can get a replacement boss (basically the end bit with the splines inside that is visible on your pic) from Greenmech. You need to cut the old one off and have the new one welded on - it needs to be done by someone good at welding though as you want it dead centre and set to the correct depth. You'll possibly find that the motor splines are actually ok - they may look slightly rounded off but the shaft is harder than the roller boss so can normally be reused. Complete new motors aren't particularly expensive online - they are pretty much disposable items really.

About 30 years ago I had a similar problem with the drive shaft to the pump on the nose of the county, I had the hole machined to a very tight fit for one of these

They come in various sizes that nest in each other.

 

I heated the shaft and banged the splined adapter in and ran a ring of braze round the top ( to keep heat low so as not to lose hardness of spline), it's been working ever since.
