The only helpful information I can give you is they use Yanmar engines on the compact/midi tractors which are basically bullet proof, just check the hydraulics has if similar to Yanmar they have a strange setup pump wise and that the fluid is correct level and oil is clean .

I use an old Ford 3000 to mow 2 acres of grass with a 6 foot finishing mower. Great finish, easy to get parts, very straight forward and less than the price of a ride on mower. Maybe the Deere suits for more reasons, its a rare machine in my neck of the woods. I find a good rule of thumb is to check price and availability of a full service kit. Any problems steer clear! best of luck

Thanks guys, appreciate your help.

Its difficult to advise a friend if you have not had one or worked on one. Good news about the engine though. I didn't know JD used yanmar. I was thinking along the same lines as hilux, 135 and a good topper but the loader might be usefull for him and I would think a mid mounted deck will be more maneuverable.

I think it might be worth considering so unless any horror stories come up we will have a look.

its his decision, I got a cheap mowerI think its a sitrex or namelike that, it has three sets of blades shaped in an x. Great tool. as a matter of interest is the deck easily removable? does it raise up out of the way for other tractor duties?

Thanks, I will have a look around for sitrex mowers. Sounds a good option if he goes a little bigger. Presumably the blades are vee belt driven with one blade in front of the others.

Not sure about removing /raising the deck on the JD but the ground clearance when not in use and removal is certainly something to bear in mind. I am familiar with bigger tractors mowers and toppers but compacts are a new thing for me. I should have a better idea if we see it next week.
