Out of curiosity, why "tsunami"?

The current ongoing situation in japan or for different reasons?

The Tsunami hit all along the redwood coast the weekend I found this tree. I was roadblocked in at that park for almost an entire day. Which worked out because that's where I planned to hike. I was able to drive south for cell phone signal a couple of times and the police let me back in.

Like half the boats and most of the harbor docks got decimated in Crescent City, CA.

We at lunch there yesterday, and there were piles of driftwood and sea weed heaps right up to the doorstep of the restaurant.

there's always loads of driftwood on the beach at crescent city, did all that get dumped further in then? i believe they stuff it in containers and ship it around the world from there too. i did some exploring round that area a few years ago and loved it, all the huge trees and the many huge old stumps. cool place:thumbup1:

If you know where the Chart Room restaurant is down Anchor Steam Way, there was driftwood deposited all over the parking lot and road there right up to the front door step. Not just it, but all over that area.

The number of gawkers was amazing.

We were driving down that road to eat. It was two days after the tsunami, and there a bunch of people driving their cars in there just to stare at the area. A steady stream of traffic.

i had to search google earth for the restaurant but we visited the north beach and used the library for internet connection, some ace books on the old logging there, i was really taken with the coast redwoods in the area and even planted some here lastyear for a client to eventually block out a new 4 storey apartment block near his boundary, he wanted something that gets really big so i took him a pair of 10ft sequoia sempervirens which he liked, he loves telling everyone they are the tallest trees on the planet:thumbup1:

Update ... November 2014 ...

We measured the tallest hemlock again this month, and despite one of the driest growing seasons in the north redwood coast, it grew taller. Likewise the tallest known maple. The hemlock's height is now ...

273.43 ft / 83.33 m

Hello Mario

Did you use the same lasers and measuring point as with 2011?

What equipment do you use?

Thanks

David

Same lasers

Lasertech Impulse 200LR mounted on a tripod with cable, and prism on tripod. Same spots on ground for upper and lower grade.

Only difference this time is we placed a tag near the "window" where we started so we don't have to go down to the base again. Means I can measure yearly now, and solo.
