Which beginner chainsaw?

Hi there, thanks for your help so far.

 

I'm looking at buying my first petrol chainsaw. It wouldn't be used a great deal but I want something that's going to last and be able to take on more work in the future. After looking at really cheap ones for £80 through to £350 middle range saws, I've come across the husqvarna 236 for £175 brand new.

 

Would this be a good place to start? And what are the alternatives from stihl, solo, etc? I didn't realise hitachi make chain saws too. Worth a look?

My first saw was a Ms180,its still going strong,and still less than 200 quid if you shop around.

If you can get to the APF tomorrow you should get a good deal and hopefully plenty of advice.

I'm looking at a used makita dsc430 on ebay, currently at £117 plus £20 postage. Looks a nice bit of kit.

one of my mate brought as ms170 and as long as you keep it sharp there fine for sending up etc but will struggle for any logging up unless its softwood.

On a serious note, the husky sounds just right Jonny 5.

 

If you havent already, get some basic training too- you can do a 2 day LANTRA course that will show you how to maintain your saw, and some safe cutting techniques etc for about £180 down here, and you will soon save that on doing your own repairs etc,
