Seems there's an average of a one death a year involving big chippers in the states and a couple of near misses

 

 

I think there is more than that. Been doing some research for safety processes on chippers etc. and there's at least five a year in the US. Untrained staff, not familiar with the gear, no second person helping, operators feeding while wearing climbing harnesses, operators leaning in to the hopper. It's pretty simple stuff really. The dripline is a good source for reading up on accidents and fatalities within the industry.

Just my humble opinion but my experience of the USA is there are a lot of wannabee lumberjacks/outdoors men types. Nearly everyone i met outside the cities had a chainsaw and happily would get up a ladder to hack at, what is by british standards, was a very large tree. Inexperienced operators using large chippers is going to result in more casualties.
