Hi all I brought a tirfor the other day and there was an spare wire rope that the guy said I could have for free! I took it away thinking great but the ends been cut off so can't thread it in the winch!! Is there a way to re chamfer the end or is it just best to get rid?? Cheers in advance :thumbup1:

you'll need to cut the frays off with a grinder and then weld them together into a "bullet". But that cable in your hand is missing a strand - tirfor rope has 4 or sometimes 5 strands, so you will need to cut off the damaged missing strand part anyway. If the whole rope is missing the strand just forget it, it won't work and will be dangerous. It looks old, carefully examine the swage eye end of the rope, it can rust in there, very dangerous.

I've re-ended Tirfor (and other griphoist) cables using the methods above on several occasions.

Whip the rope tightly with wire about 2" on the good side of the last bit of damage, then cut the damaged end off with a cutting disk in an angle grinder (or a wire rope shear if you happen to have one lying around). Then weld the newly cut end into a blob, and shape with the grinder so that it has a fairly well pronounced chamfer on it. If need be reweld as you grind to ensure that all the strands are securely held in the weld. Finally remove the whipping.

It isn't hard but can take a little practice. It is handy to have a new rope as an example of what you're aiming for when you do the first one.

Remember that Tirfors and all other griphoist winches use special ropes, you can't just use any old wire rope with them.

The clones all take generic 6x19 wire core, 8.5, 11, or 16mm, very available and affordable. The special proprietary wire rope are for the original Tractel tirfors. Why didn't Tractel design their machines around generic cable sizes? The answer - £££. The real machine are way nicer than the clones, but for the money, not worth it.
