Hi All

Thinking about expanding the business. Currently a small tree surgery business SE London/ NW kent.

About 70% of our work is commercial. Looking to expand our service for commercial customers.

Just wondering what people are offering whats profitable and whats not? Through their experience.

We expanding our knotweed business.

Other things im looking at is

-Fencing, tree protection fencing, Newt fencing.

-Resinbond gravel tree pit.

-Commercial ground maintenance.

I see it as two choices - increase your capacity (more workers/teams) or expand your services. Pardon the pun but branching into different fields can be the biggest challenge. What works for domestic tree work is not necessarily the same for commercial tree work. If you jump into grounds maintenance then it can be night and day. Kit helps but for me GM is all about lots of guys working for cheap and you make your money on the volume. Some of the GM companies I work with have 150 guys a day going round. Very easy to come unstuck.

If you are good tree surgeons concentrate on that. Invest in kit. Get a term contract for a council and run 5 or 6 teams then look at revisit.

Snap, i am at the point where i can just keep ticking over as we are, OR look at exploring other avenues of work. The end game for me is to make enough money for early retirement the problem is the more you earn the more you spend, catch 22!
