Unexplained dust tree damage

Hello Forum,

 

I was sent this pic of a tree which had been looped at 35ft as you can see it's covered in ivy and has a bracket fungus on it. Sorry forgotten the name.

 

The tree seams to have localised dust on it. (Not up and down the trunk.)

Un likely that it's from a saw, as the tree beside has no dust on it.

 

I'm thinking a insect has done this.

Anyone have any ideas.
