Replanting Site Advice

Hi guys,

 

I'm replanting 2.05 ha on a local estate in the next couple of weeks. 30% Sitka, 20% Lodegpole then 50% mixed broadleaves.

 

There will likely be lots more planting on the estate in the next few years, I am curious as to opinions on what planting equipment you would recommend?

 

We were just going to go in with spades/spits and make shift sacks to hold the trees! Worth investment in other gear?

If it's got stumps from previous crop it's spades I'm afraid, with a good team and mindset, it's not bad really.

 

Depends on what you are aiming for rows or random and how big the plants are. Bulldog do a tree planting spear, I have one and generally only use for hedge planting as it's nibble and you can work close to other plants with it.

I use a grafter for tree planting. Got the depth without the effort of moving a lot of soil.

I also set out plants in bundles pre mixed bagged up. Start with first bag, grab enough trees to get to next bag and so on. Dragging bags of plants is unnessassary for us. When you reach bag throw it into next row ready.

By yourself a planting bag, if plants are small enough. Look a bit like a newspaper delivery bag.

A bulldog spade (I use an old rabbiting spade) , good bag, canes sprayed with tree paint and a good selection of podcasts!

I use Schlich tree planting spade from Stanton Hope, mostly hedge planting in heavy clay
