The gap is not what it seems, the roller knife tips dont stay in synch because the rollers motors are piped on a common feed and return. The gap looks big when a knife tip say on the top roller is pointing at a flat of a knife on the bottom roller. If you were to get the knives on the top and bottom rollers to run tip to tip the gap would be small but they dont stay in synch. As Simonm points out they do wear .

is the actually guide ways at the bottom where the slide slides down completely clear of debris etc making the roller slide box sit fully down if yes then the Roller blades have worn too short

 

That is why I asked the question has it just happened because bits of wood get trapped in slot in roller box.
