What have you discovered on your travels?

I was working in a nearby field and saw this bridge up the track so being the nosey kind I went and had a look.

 

Apparently its part of the Wey & Arun Canal built to bring people from London to the Sea back in the day (about 1800 and something).

Some crazy giant stuck a pair of swords in the ground then heaped up the helmets of dead soldiers at either end:

The picture of the interesting stairs shows where the horse that towed the canal boat and the canal people went up and around the locks and met the boat at the other side.

Didn't axactly find this place but have taken out a lot of trees and was back to grind the stumps so the grass can be cut back so it can be seen again from the main hall.

I think I worked on that lock, putting in some of the stonework on the left hand side.

 

Canal restoration by volunteers is a long, slow process but they eventually get done. There are some reasonable lengths of the Wey and Arun which are now back in water.
