Birch graft?

Only looking at it on a phone. It's bizzare, it could be an interstock scion for compatibility reasons, but doubt it. More likely the trunk had protection on it such as a deer guard. When the tree fills it. The bark can tend to become more rootlike as the guard makes the tissue think its underground.

This would explain the neat lines top and bottom.

Thanks for replies, I thought it was to "neat" for a graft but I don't know a whole lot on the subject, more used to seeing fruit tree root stock grafts etc. I haven't seen a birch like this so it would be great to be enlightened.

I guess it could of had something wrapped around it at some point although most of the trees were planted on this housing estate and no other birches have this bark on them and I don't think deer are in the area.

Got a few snaps on my phone but I was just quickly passing.

Just had another thought. I saw new urban planting at Leeds arena last year. All the trees had up to 6ft high wrapped in hessian around the stem, a practice used to prevent damage in transit. They either sent clueless staff to plant them or left them for vandal resistance perhaps?
