Massey Ferguson 50B Digger

I've just bought this massy digger for light yard duties and as a bit of a toy. It did't cost me a lot of money and is in good condition for a 1979 machine.

 

Has anybody ever owned oned one of these I have a questions.

Such as

I'd like to run a simple splitter of the hydraulics there is no obvious hydraulic aux anywhere how would I create one and is it a massive job or easily doable by a man with a spanner.

Another is the dipper ram is tiddling hydraulic oil. To fix this is it a DIY job or a specialist (I once re sealed a tw150 motor which was quite simple) and is there a tip on a easy way to remove it with getting clobbered by the thing.

HI ROSE my mate worked on them for 30 years plus for massey so he will no pm with what you need to no and will pm you back thanks jon

Re the dipper. Get the dipper vertical, hand-brake on and remove the hydraulic couplings, pins and then have some help to remove the ram itself. They're heavy!

Unscrew the end cap and pull the chrome out. be prepared to get wet though and remember cleanliness is godliness where hydraulics are concerned!. Take a picture of how the seals go together, draw a picture how they come apart...This is important! String them on a piece of wire/cable tie and take them to;M Barnwell Services Ltd - The UK's leading distributor of Fluid Sealing Products unless you have an alternative supplier.

Check inside the tube for debris, just in case. Clean the tube, chrome and re-assemble. Hard work but satisfying! Re-assemble......No more leaks.

 

On the power front. You'll have to pinch a supply from the feed & return of any one of the rams using a couple of three port valves.

As with all hydraulics keeping the fittings clean is really important. Apart from that, simples. To take the power you will have to tie one of the levers into its operating position and working out which is the flow and return.

I shall have a go at doing the ram, you can't beet the sense of achievement from fixing something. It was one of my customers who never used It but had sentimental attachment to it. I have been eying it up for years. The paint works original I believe but protected with a protective green mould which preserved it and got washed off. I will raid my my hydraulic shop for one of those valves.

 

Another question does anyone have a manual for this? I have a service manual not a operators it has a few leavers which I can't fathom what they do. Mendip does your mate?

 

Also it's got a torque converter would this use the same hydraulic reservoir as the other bits

Mines on an "R" plate 1978ish mines manual gearbox so cant help with your torque convertor question, what levers cant you work out work what?
