Husqvarna 257XP

My trusty Husqvarna 257XP (til now anyway !) needs some help. Chain brake clicks on at the slightest of movement on the saw so I can't use it. Even if I tilt the saw slightly it comes on. Has anyone got any experience of this? My local repair place didn't really seem to know what the problem was and said it would need a complete new chain brake assembly (including handle) at around £100. Somebody else said to pick up a second hand one and even the 254 part would fit. I could appreciate some advice if anyone knows about this sort of thing.

Sounds like the knee-link isnt going far enough over centre. It might just be some crap in there.

Take the cover off the saw and put the brake on to release some of the tension and inspect the mechanism.

Dont forget to wear some eye protection.

Google workshop manual, should find one easy. If not let me know i have one somewhere for 254 i can email to u.

Take a very close look at exactly how the hand guard fits over the leaf spring and coil spring inside.

Its a bugger to get it right without knowing how it goes back in and impossible to explain in a book or on here!

It will be worth stripping down as there is probably one component givinng the issue rather than the whole assembly giving issues.

One thing to watch out for, there is a small leaf spring that is on the brake that has two thin arms on it, go carefully with this part as it is easy to break the part.....don't ask me how I know:blushing: Part -501 87 47-01
