I have used chainsaws for quite a number of years for my own personal use, and have taken down trees for firewood.

 

Got a bit of a problem at the moment with a Stihl MS 170 and I wonder if anyone can help?

 

The oil from the pump does not pump enough oil to the bar and chain.

I’ve blown out all the channels and cleaned out the tank, and refilled with clean oil, does not seem much better. Wonder if it may be that this particular model does not pump a lot of oil out? I’m thinking about fitting a new pump, wondering if anyone knows how to get to the old pump to take out and fit new? Looks to me that you have to take the sprocket off, and lift needle bearing out, but not sure where to go from there.

Know a fair bit about chainsaw maintenance and repair, but not an expert by a long way. Appreciate any pointers?

Ok.

 

First this bread needs moving to the chainsaw forum. Will get the techs attention. Mods can do that.

 

Second the oil pump. These pumps can be a pita.

 

Firstly I would remove the clutch and check the gearing behind it to ensure the nylon gears and drives are in good nick. Only oiling a small amount is not always down to the pump. If the gearing is worn slightly it will move slowly and slow the pump.

 

To remove the pump you need to remove the sourounding handle bar. The pump is under this at the front when saw upside down. This will either need a tool (bit like a crow bar) and a bolt to fit into end of pump to pull it out. (Can't remember the size off hand). M8 or something. The pump is a pencil looking one, they are cheap.

 

But my money is on the gear drive from the clutch/crank area. Ther are a few posts around on how to remove these parts. On the "what's on your bench thread" may need to do some flicking through it to find them tho. It's a long thread. Start at the end and works back.

 

Whee abouts are you. May be a tech close!
