Pros and cons of removing spark arrestor?

Hey there, seen a lot of posts about people doing muffler mods and removing the spark arrestor. Now I'm aware that the pros are a gain in power, I was just wondering if there are any bad points to removing the item and why it's there in the first place?

Chances are you'll get a grown up come along with the proper answer shortly :001_smile: but my understanding is that it is to partly stop any hot bits of carbon from being ejected onto dry tinder in hotter countries and partly something to do with emmisions.

I can't see any bad coming from removing it as it's a restriction in the exhaust so surely can only be reducing the potential power.

Chainsaws have a very short distance between the cylinder and the exhaust outlet. There is potential for burning pieces of carbon to be emitted from the muffler causing fire in dry tinder like conditions.

The spark arrestor is there to stop this happening, the down side is that it will restrict flow slightly and has the potential to block and choke the engine.

My take - in the UK it seems to rain every day, the chances of having a problem with this sort of issue are slim! If you do lots of work in areas of dry bracken or grass then removing the spark arrestor may not be the best ideal though some saws are not fitted with them.

The mufflers are fitted for all markets and as such have been designed to work in dry arid environments as well as our crappy wet weather........!
