we put a 11hp honda on our 10 tonne sheppach. The spitter has a 2" ram but the engine often stalls under load before the relief valve lets go. The splitter was originally 3 phase. Never got to the bottom of the problem but often feel it needs the 13hp or a little diesel with more torque.

5hp is nowhere near enough, it will stall constantly or be painfully slow.

All engines will run a 3000psi pump, but it's the volume of the pump that is the cruical thing. The lower the volume the less the HP needed, try putting a higher volume pump on a low HP engine and it will stall

Measure you cylinder or go on logsplitter websites and look at the spec of the machines they sell, in the spec it should give you the tonnage and volume of the pump and some even give the cycle times how long it takes for the ram to do a full cycle in and out

You should be able to obtain all your info from that

An electric motor has less of a tendancy to slow down under load than a petrol engine.

An electric powered 14cfm compressor is fitted with a 3hp motor but use a petrol engine and you'll need a 5.5 hp petrol engine...
