Scew Type Splitters..??

Asking on behalf of a mate who is considering getting a mini digger for general work around his farm, but was also thinking of getting one of those hydraulic screw type splitters for it too...

He gets a lot of odd awkward pieces of wood from tree surgeons, so he thinks a screw splitter will be better than having his guys using chainsaws etc to get stuff down to a manageable size to then split further....

Friend of mine who buys in a lot of oversize has one of Wilsons ones on a three ton excavator, prefers it to a conventional splitter as it can break down much longer timber. He then puts the split down stiff through a Posch 360. I think it does leave a messier log though.

The stuff he gets is from tree surgeons. So they're in about 2ft length pieces, not huge whole lengths....

How does a screw splitter handle 'rings', any different to lengths?

Oh, and he doesn't have a processor for the pieces to go through after breaking them down, just a vertical splitter....

It handles rings better as they are flatter and wider and more stable ( resist the possible tendency to flip ) . The one in the picture above has the screw to far above the table IMHO .The closer to the table the less the moment of leverage is lessening the tendency to flip . I think they work very well but the essential thing is they must have plenty of torque . They dont have to spin fast but they must not stop turning under load . If that happens you waste all the time you gained over a hydraulic splitter cutting the stuck log off .

We started off looking last year for one as we found it difficult to sell on large rings. Eventually went for a German black splitter. We bought directly from Germany as there is no dealer in Eire. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit, has transformed how we handle large timber in terms of labour, chains and petrol, not to mention our backs. We can also fill more loads per day as rings are broken down to generally 18 ". Works best on timber like beech/ash but less effective on chestnut and conifer as the soft timber absorbs the force of the screw.
