Those lovable Irish traveller types have decided to head west and have been associated with the usual increase in the local crime statistics
They came into a mate's yard near Bodmin for a scope, threatened the owner of a caravan park if he refused them free pitches for a few nights, and relieved a local builder I know of 3K's worth of tools. Police were informed of the theft of the tools while it was in progress, and we were all well impressed with their response - they immediately despatched a car which promptly arrived on the scene a mere 24 hours later. :sneaky2:
So, just a warning to any Cornish boys to keep their eyes and ears open. Oh, and don't expect any assistance from the boys in blue.

Evening All,

I've agreed to buy around 100 ton of hardwood cord from roadside just three miles from the yard its a mix of Ash, Sycamore and Cherry.
Because I'm going to haul it myself We've agreed to measure the stack so we'll know the m3, also agreed that we'll allow 50% air.
We've agreed a price per ton - my question is what weight should be allowed per m3?
I've always bought in cord on an artic so I know where I stand weight wise.
It's all been cut for around 8-9 months

Thanks in advance

I was reading another thread a few minutes ago about wood species which reminded me of this. I was asked by a local pub, a few years ago now, to supply either beech or elm for their Italian style wood burning pizza oven. They were very specific about it being elm or beech, I asked at the time why it had to be one of these species, but never got an answer over, "because it does". I had a bit of low quality elm at the time so it wasn't a problem to do it, but I always wondered why the species was so specific. Does anyone know the answer?

few ideas and settled on the bungee or rope round the log idea, surprised how quick it is, takes only 2 or 3 rounds about 8 inch diameter to loose fill a biggish bag.I thought I'd charge a fiver a bag if delivered with a load of logs. The pics might be useful to anybody else that just needs a few bags now and again.
I'm splitting sycamore here which seems to pop apart before the splitting knife touches the bungee.Anybody got any thoughts on the best species for kindling I'd be glad to hear.Cheers.

Hi all,

My 357 is spectacularly doing my head right in. Seriously threatening to smash it to pieces and get a Stihl instead. My 346XP has never let me down, but this heap of crap is testing my patience with the list of ongoing problems.

Anyway, the latest problem is that it is not oiling. It's still pissing out loads of oil from the crank case but not through the oil hose / outlet. I've stripped the components down and blown them through with an airline. Still nothing. I imagine, therefore, that it is a pump problem. The only thing I can think of that has happened recently is that the saw went in to the shop for a clutch repair, and when it came back I noticed that the pump drive wheel was loose. I removed the clutch and screwed the pump drive wheel back in place. It keeps turning and does not tighten (i.e. as if the thread has gone) Is this normal? Also, is there a test to see if the pump is actually faulty or not?

If anyone can offer any advice, apart from bin the heap of crap, then that would be great.

Many thanks,
Matthew

Hi

I have been given an old chainsaw to mess about with. Unfortunately it doesn't start ( probably why my boss gave it to me for free).

The chainsaw is 8-10 years old and has been sitting around for a year or so now.

I have checked the spark plug and there appears to be a spark there, fuel line seems to be in a reasonable order.

Could somebody please let me know what could be up with it and if its worth spending a few quid on getting it working again.

Thanks, Luke

The long awaited BS8545 was released in draft today. You can read it at: Trees: from nursery to independence in the landscape ? Recommendations | DRS

This standard is in some ways long overdue - the rate of failure for newly planted trees is way too high and much of this is due to poor preparation and planting practice.

This standard therefore sets the bar for better planting...and your comments are all welcome on the BSI website as this draft is open for consultation until Aug 31st.

Me and my ARB dog. Clearing out some of the decent wood (oak, silver birch) before the bulldozer comes in.
They are going to clear about 3 hectares so should make a nice field. I think in total they took 420 Douglas fir and a lorry load of chestnut. Don't know of the going rate for wood here but the old chap is getting just under €20k.

hi all, theres a land at work, who comes in for work experience, twice a week, when not at college. He has got his cs30-and 31 assesment in the morning. However, he said for the cs30, they ask you for a bore cut to severe the wood, we just usually cut down move the log over and finnish it.
He reckons the trainer didnt cover bits, and wants to know if when carrying the bore cut, do you have to cut all the way to the ground and come back up, or can you leave a bit at the bottom, roll it over and finnish it of.
Cheers

Hello all,

As part of my HND research project I need to get an idea of the value of the timber in a small woodland near Hexham, Northumberland.

There are 200 larch (european I think), very clean and straight, 50 years old, 30m high, DBH 40-50cm. The site is undulating and steeply sloping (30%) down away from the nearest vehicle access point - lorries would be able to park some 100m away.

My questions are:
1) What could I expect to receive if I sold the timber in situ (ie. the buyer fells and extracts)?
2) What would be the smallest quantity of trees a buyer might be willing to take this way?

Measurement are approximate at the moment.

I'm not looking for accurate quotes, just reasonable suggestions from people more knowledgable than me so that I can make an educated guess at a figure as part of my assignment.

Thanks, all!

I am currently in need of some information on a couple of tree planting spades (Schlick and Mansfield). I am just wondering if someone would be able to point me in the right direction of a couple of good websites that have some info on them. If not websites then some books and their authors would be good too.

Don't know whether here or the milling forum would be best for this but I need a bit of help.

I do quite a bit of re sawing on my vertical bandsaw. When I say deep cuts I mean up to 10"-11" max. The problem I get sometimes is the blade develops what I would call an oscillation leaving a coarse herring bone type pattern on the sawn face. This can happen with a brand new blade so I don't think it is down to sharpness. I have never really understood the cause and have tried different tensions and blade types but never really seen a clear correlation. What do you recon?
