you will need an operaters license, and an op base, poss have to apply to vosa for all this, tacho rules can be varied,if in a circle from your base of a bout 50kms,but it is a minefield, also you will need regular inspections by either a garage or yourself, but these will need to be documented and available to vosa to inspect, and of course the mot will be by vosa, not much sricter, but less leeway for small things unlike a class 7 test,i would stick with 3.5 ton,so much less hasasel unless you are a big firm

i ran a isuzu 7.5t for 3 years and she was fine and never caused me any grief, but test time was always nervous city,i did all my own work on her, qualified as a psv mech,so i always kept 6week inspection sheets ,but as my truck looked immaculate i never got much of a look at,but some were awlful to look at,and always seemed to be pulled over,

I agree completely, far too much hassle running something on an I license.

Tongue in cheek there Peter as you seem to get by nicely with your big rig. Ya i reckon a 3.5 tonner makes for an easy life in alot of respects. Thanks for all the replies.

https://www.gov.uk/drivers-hours/exemptions-from-eu-law

Says your exempt if your operating 100km from base , anyway worth a read.

Exempt for tacho if you are using the lorry to carry equipment or goods for use in the course of your work and driving is not the main activity. Exemption doesn’t cover delivering goods. Still need operator’s licence.
