Gravel on me drive

Planning on pulling our old tarmac drive up and also the front lawn to use as additional parking, i am wanting to put some sort of gravel down, i did plan on using ground retention grid to stop tram lines with vehicles in and out until i saw how expensive it is. If i use a whacker plate on the sub base and compact it enough would this be enough to stop the gravel from being pressed into the ground :confused1:

Depends on the subsoil if it's clay then it'll get wet during the winter in which case your gravel will sink into it but if it's shillet then it probably won't !...

Best case scenario would be shillet base with some sort of liner !...:thumbup1:

Just out of interest what's your budget/how big's your garden cos the thicker the gravel layer the less sinkage you'll get !...

Nah, if your gonna use hardcore then I'd forget the mypex and just put a decent layer of gravel on top, the weeds will still grow in the gravel cos of the silt that'll build up in the gravel over the years (mud off your tyres/dust in the rain etc) you'll just have to spray for weeds every so often but I shouldn't think weeds'll be to much of a problem !...:thumbup1:

Just done the same myself. My drive was rough old tarmac on top of concrete. I ripped the whole lot up, put down few tonnes of recycled road planings which I got a £10 per tonne, whacker plate on that and 100mm gravel on top. Had vechicles and trailers all over it and no sinkage yet. As for weeds, no point with memebrane as the other post says, weeds still grow in the gravel, just keep on top of it. :thumbup1:
