Hey all, have just moved to Devon from Bristol, mortonhampstead in Dartmoor national park. I've not secured anything work wise down here yet, but was wondering what to expect? Is there a difference in pay etc? Just want the down low from some locals really! Listening to sheep instead of cars is nice!

lovely area, but expect a lower pay, constant fighting for and undercutting for work, new companies sprouting up everywhere etc, or is this just a general description of the whole country?! on a serious note, mortenhampstead is a lovely area and apart from proarb just down the road im not too sure of anybody else operating in that area

Thanks mate - I'm hoping to try and subby for around £100 day rate. 3 years exp, 2 years climbing - own climbing kit, saws, ppe, etc. Do you think that's too much?? Thanks

No that's the absolute minimum if your any good, if you are good good charge more than that

Im from Princetown 12 miles from you, I started my tree buisness 6 years ago and am almost solely a dedicated fencing company! simply put, there isn't a great deal of tree work on Dartmoor or rather tree surgery work, and be prepared to travel far and wide to get it- exeter south devon etc. Prices are definiately lower than bristol/midlands areeas too. Sorry to sound negetive- but i speak as i find, however what you lose in work you gain from living in a great area- just be prepared to be adapatable perhaps for other work perhaps not always climbing etc.

Id say £100- £140 is about going rate for freelancer unless you are very good.

Well that's a positive response :) yep I can see I'll be traveling a bit more to find work, that's OK though. To be fair I've only seen a few guys in Bristol being paid more than £110a day... I would rather have a lower day rate and (hopefully) be more flexible secure more work, than the opposite.
