Stay safe out there

Well I have now been climbing for 19 years, and today for the very first time I had a Karabiner open on me. I was ascending hand over hand, got myself in a slightly kack handed position when I heard a click...I looked down and there was my karabiner wide open!!

I've purposely not named the karabiner as I don't think its relevant, the point is it can happen given the right circumstances...don't get out of the habit of regularly checking your karabiners throughout each and every climb :thumbup1:

I had a karabiner open on me before Christmas , I had finished getting the brash out of a large white poplar & was going back for a rigging pulley luckily I was stroped on the large stem I was spiking back up , i was leaning back & close to the stem and a bulge on the tree opened the karabiner , I leaned to one side and it closed , I repeated the movement to watch how it opened , lesson learned never take anything for granted !!

Near miss here as well. I now have a 10m and 27m rope thanks to not concentrating and being complacent.

I've done this more than once, the bugger is it's always at the top, when I have slack in my system, and I end up having to cut my spliced eye off.

The bright side is I get a new side strop.

This thread could correspond to a current health and safety thread on here...
