Team Leader role

In my opinion a TL doesn't necessarily need to be the climber, but that person does need a thorough knowledge base of the tree work industry and be able to act and behave, and encourage their fellow team members, as professional arborists.

They should be able to deal with any situation as it occurs and act accordingly, and above all honesty; if it goes wrong or something happens they should be able to stand in front of their boss and say what happened.

Probably loads more but of the top of my head this is what I look for.

You need to be a mate and a boss to the guys you work with on site. You need to motivate them/lay down the law to work half hour later to finish a job rather than knocking off for an early finish and returning another day. When someone who's been at the company 20 years is wanting to leave site at 2pm, you need inform them you'll be doing 1more tree, but making it sound like a compromise so they're not bitter towards you. be a mediator between hot headed arbs and the dumb public.

On site the buck stops with you-confortations, mediation, problems, breakdowns, accidents, breakages, you're the one who deals with it, even if your the youngest, less experienced, smallest etc

Have a look at this;

http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrpdf/rr668.pdf

As far as the HSE are concerned, you are the 'competent person'.

Doesn't really say much about the reality of the job but the content of the document sets out what your responsibilities are in the eyes of the HSE - obviously this has legal teeth.

It's specific for rigging operations...

Quite simply lead by example. You will get more respect than if you're just poing and shouting. That would mean some climbing but that also shows you like the job and not just the authority.

:dito: nobody is above any job, regardless of what thier job title is, you also need the patience of a saint, negotiation skills of the finest mediator, listen to things in confidence like a priest, give advice like a father, listen to their moans like a mother and on top of all that keep them pointed in the right direction to make sure the job gets done and every one goes home safe :laugh1:
