Hercules project

"The "Sustainable Futures for Europe's Heritage in Cultural Landscapes" project (HERCULES) seeks to empower public and private actors to protect and sustainably manage cultural landscapes that possess significant cultural, socio-economic, historical, natural and archaeological value, at a local, national and Pan-European level.

Funded through the Seventh Framework Program (FP7) of the EU, the project assembles 13 partners from European Universities and research institutes, small and medium-sized enterprises and non-governmental organisations to develop a holistic approach that incorporates diverse stakeholder perspectives to appropriately address landscape changes.

While the adoption of the European Landscape Convention (ELC) has attracted much attention from the sciences, policy makers and the general public, cultural landscapes are in need of further action to ensure their continued existence."

Forest Communications Network are the main UK based organisation

Modbury has been chosen for the Uk's pilot case study due to its rich and diverse landscape.

Forest Communication Network Ltd

Forest Communication Network Ltd., (FOC) is a new small UK based SME. It's workforce are all Land Management Practitioners who work on contracts to further sustainable land management. Knowledge transfer is key to the operation of the company who are working on methods to provide guidance for all other LMP's seeking to maintain or enhance landscape features.

The aim of FOC is to use the European Landscape Convention as the principal tool to implement a hub for the transfer of academic, cultural and scientific knowledge and art into a wide public and practitioner audience. FOC is participating in work package 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 to enable the development of appropriate communication tools in the project.

Meet the team:

Pip Howard is a practising silviculturalist who specialises in working with tree roots and as such crosses the boundaries between forestry, arboriculture and landscaping industries. He is a Director of Forest Communication Network Ltd.

Hen Anderson is a sustainable land manager, specialising in permacultural and agroforestry techniques on her own farm in South West England. She is a director of Forest Communication Network Ltd.

Locals of the 'elder' persuasion :001_rolleyes. Ex councillors, Modbury community groups who do voluntary work coppicing, clearing bridleways etc. Nobody under the age of 60 from what I could see. The aim is to survey the landscape including significant trees over the 3 year period. Get landowners, locals, managers etc involved. There will probably be grants made available to enable people to get into the schools to set up projects....educating the kids about trees, landscape etc. Unfortunately I had a 50th in N. Devon on the eve o missed what promised to be a fine talk by Jeremy Barrell.

Heres a blog from the day.
