What First Saw should I get - Stihl vs Huskie?

Basically I've been contemplating getting my own saw, as whilst I'm employed at the moment, and I have chainsaw equipment provided, my contract runs out in a few months and if I decide to go down a more self-employed type route, or not even that, just go for a job which requires my own equipment, then I'll be better prepared.

 

I want a saw which is reliable, light, easy to use and has no problem cutting small and medium sized trees.

 

I've used both Huskies and Stihls. Mainly Stihl MS 260/261 C and Huskie 440, 445 and 450 X-Torq.

 

Personally, I would say I prefer the Huskies. They are marginally lighter I think, and when chain-tensioning, this is tool-free. I believe that Stihl MS 261 C models (specifically the C models) have been known to malfunction more (random dying). What I don't get then, is why are Stihl chainsaws so much more expensive than Huskies?

 

Really want something not much more than £300, so so far I have found this as a best bet:

That aside I think the Stihl saws you mention are in the "pro " saw range and the Husqvarnas in the " semi " pro range . So perhaps a try of the equivalent pro husky is in order . Its well worth considering Echo and Dolmar Some good saws there that arnt complicated by A/T and so forth . Old school Tech with old school reliability . Check em out .

Stick with what you know, what you have used and what you prefer. I can only offer you a personal preference of Stihls. I love my 261 and 461. Having spoken to various people about the whole Stihl/Husqvarna argument, I have come to the conclusion that it really is down to personal preference. Though I would say that huskys seem to have the edge on power to weight ratio. I prefer Stihl as they are what I have always used, feel comfortable with and know my way around. My friends 550 on a 15" bar is awesome though!

Prepare yourselves for the can of worms that have just exploded everywhere haha. Stihl fans worship their saws and husky boys worship theirs. All I will say is they're both top of the food chain. I can't help myself though and have to throw a spanner in the works by saying... What about echo?

Personally, some of the later offerings from Stihl & Husqvarna seem to be prone to certain types of faults, OK there are a lot of them out there & people only post when they have a problem.

 

However, from what Ive seen & heard of saws from Echo & Dolmar if I was looking at a new saw they would be top of my list.
